All costume pieces are custom made. Although Zemirah does design and construct bedlah for herself, due to time constraints, she is only making veils, skirts, gauntlets, headbands, etc. for other dancers. She will use your measurements, your fabric and color choices, and your design specifications (trims, slits, fullness, etc.). You can choose from the basics or ask her to design something based on what you’ve seen or already own.
Hand-dyed silk
Zemirah personally dyes all hand-dyed silk items. The beauty of hand-dyed silk is its uniqueness. She will do her best to match colors or create a pattern that you request.
The dye used is an acid dye made specifically for dyeing protein fibers like silk. The results are permanent and both light- and wash- fast. Because the dyes are used only with vinegar and water, they are considered “low impact.”
Fabrics
Zemirah works mostly with a variety of silks and velvets, but also uses chiffon, satin, and lycra. She has fabric samples available to help you choose. Colors may slightly vary from the samples sent to her by the fabric producers and are occasionally unavailable.
She uses 8mm China Silk (also called Habotai) to make all silk veils, skirts, and harem pants. You can find these items, especially veils, made from lighter-weight silk (5mm or 6mm). But she has found that the lighter weight silk does not last as long, wash as well, or hold a hem well. If you want a lighter weight silk she will use it upon your request.
Prices
Because all pieces are custom made for you, the prices listed may vary. Special fabrics, trims, and design details will increase the price. Zemirah will always try to find the best price for all supplies but some items are just expensive. She will let you know if the cost is greater than expected and she can give you an estimate if you would like one.
